Q: I was told you improved someone’s back pain by performing treatment on their feet. Why did that help them feel better?
A: The fascia is a body wide network. Amazingly, there is a fascia “line” that extends from the bottom of the feet and travels to the top of the skull in two lines. It is no coincidence that these western “lines” are the same lines that have been spoken about in meridian theory of Chinese Medicine for thousands of years. By treating the feet, we are unwinding the stress and disharmony along that entire “line”. Often with back pain, I can easily palpate the tight fascia on the feet that is pulling on the back. A great technique is to perform cupping on the area of pain in the back, while I simultaneously release the feet with manual therapy techniques. This way, both the fascia on the feet and back can relax and stop playing tug-of-war with each other. The result? I’ve seen radical changes in range of motion after a treatment like I’ve described and pain relief.
